Due to the geographic layout of the main Pietermaritzburg campus, where a number of critical services are located, RMS is experiencing difficulties controlling unauthorised access for various reasons, as the campus has multiple pedestrian access points.
I wish to remind all staff of a previous Registrar’s communiqué (3 December 2025) which advised the University community that: “In keeping with previous years, no on-campus in-person service will be offered, and no unregistered person will be allowed onto campuses in the new year”.
To mitigate the situation until the formal start of the teaching semester on 10 February 2025, the following access points on the main campus will be locked / closed off with immediate effect, until 06h30 on Monday the 10th of February 2025.
- Milner Road Turnstile
- Chemistry Turnstile
- Ceramics Turnstile
I understand and appreciate that this will impact staff, registered postgrads and contractors, who will be expected to use the main University access point to enter and exit the campus, but the inconvenience is short-lived, and I trust that staff will appreciate the efforts to secure the campus, and more especially the staff working diligently to ensure a smooth start to the 2025 academic programme.
