Dear Coursework Masters, Honours, Postgraduate Diploma Students and Staff,
I wish to bring to your attention certain important dates and the relevant General Academic Rules related to Coursework Masters (CWM), Honours (Hons) and Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) student matters.
- CURRENTLY REGISTERED CWM, Hons and PGDip STUDENTS
A1. LAST DAY FOR SUBMISSION OF CWM DISSERTATION TO THE PG ADMIN OFFICES FOR POSSIBLE AUTUMN 2021 GRADUATION (Provisionally pencilled in for mid-May 2021)
- This applies only to currently registered Coursework Masters (CWM) students (Semester 2:2020), who have already tendered their intention to submit in this semester.
- The final day for submission of a CWM dissertation bound copies for examination, for possible May 2021 Graduation, was Friday, 4 December 2020 as per the approved sessional dates.
- Please see General Academic Rules CR12-CR17 for the relevant rules.
A2. FINAL DATE FOR SUBMISSION OF A CWM DISSERTATION BY A STUDENT REGISTERED IN SEMESTER 2:2020, TO ENSURE NOT HAVING TO REGISTER FOR A SUBSEQUENT SEMESTER (i.e. Semester 1:2021)
- Thursday, 4 March 2021 (as registration for CWM students closes on 05 March 2021).
A3. RE-REGISTRATION for SEMESTER 1:2021 AFTER A REGISTRATION HOLD FOR SLOW PROGRESSION (as issued at the end of Semester 2:2020)
Please note the following General Academic Rule which will be applied to COURSEWORK MASTERS students. A Registration hold, forcing application for re-admission will to be applied during the Exam Results Schedule (ERS) process, in the run up to the 5 February 2021 release of Semester 2:2020 results, in the following instance:
- CR 11 Progression: “A student who, after four (4) semesters as a full-time student or six (6) semesters as a part-time student, has not completed the requirements for the degree shall be required to apply for re-registration, which will only be permitted on receipt of a satisfactory motivation.”
- Consideration of requests for re-registration by coursework masters students after a registration hold being placed on the system in keeping with General Academic Rule CR11, are considered by the School Research and Higher Degrees Committee for a Recommendation, and College Academic Affairs Board (CAAB) for Approval.
- Please note the following important dates:
Results (incl. appropriate term decision/hold) – 5 February 2021(Friday)
Deadline for re-registration appeals – 12 February 2021 (Friday)
Meeting of School Higher Degrees Committee – 17 February 2021 (Wednesday)
Special CAAB to consider recommendations – 22 February (Monday)
Notification of applicants – 23 February 2021 (Tuesday)
Please note the following concession in terms of 2020 registered HONOURS and POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA students, despite General Academic Rules HR7(c) and PR7(c) that apply:
- Honours Students
HR7c) Progression: “A student who, after four (4) semesters as a full-time student or six (6) semesters as a part-time student, has not completed the requirements for the degree, shall be excluded.”
However, in keeping with a concession granted by Senate of July 2020, all Honours students will be granted automatic re-admission to Semester 1 of 2021 to conclude their programme of study in Semester 1 of 2021, unless College or Programme Rules preclude this. (There is no CEACOM set for February 2021)
- Postgraduate Diploma Students
PR7c) Progression: “A student who, after four (4) semesters as a full-time student or six (6) semesters as a part-time student, has not completed the requirements for the degree, shall be excluded.”
However, in keeping with a concession granted by Senate of July 2020, all Postgraduate Diploma students will be granted automatic re-admission to Semester 1 of 2021 to conclude their programme of study in Semester 1 of 2021, unless College or Programme Rules preclude this. A4. FINAL DATE FOR 2021 ACADEMIC REGISTRATION OF ANY RETURNING COURSEWORK MASTERS, HONOURS or POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA STUDENT

A5. FINAL DATE FOR SUBMISSION TO THE SCHOOL HIGHER DEGREES ADMINISTRATOR(S) OF A REQUEST TO SUSPEND SEMESTER 1:2021 STUDIES

- Please see General Academic Rule GR9(c)
“Except as provided hereunder, a student shall register in consecutive semesters.
(i) On application in advance to the relevant College with the approval of the College Academic Affairs Board (as Delegated to the Academic Leader: Research and Higher Degrees, See Academic Decision Flow, Page 6), a student’s registration may be suspended for a period of time not exceeding two (2) semesters.”
B: APPLICATIONS FOR READMISSION
B1. APPLICATIONS FOR RE-ADMISSION TO SEMESTER 1:2021 FOR ANY COURSEWORK MASTERS, HONOURS OR POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA CANDIDATE WHO WAS NOT REGISTERED IN SEMESTER 2:2020
- Please see General Academic Rule GR9 (d) (i)
Should a student fail to register for a semester:
“(i) In the case of a postgraduate student who has not been granted suspension as provided for in GR9 (c) (i) or (ii), the student must apply to the relevant College for readmission should she/he subsequently wish to return to resume studies. Such readmission shall only be approved under the conditions, rules and curricula applicable at the time of readmission and, in the case of a postgraduate research student, provided that supervisory capacity is available.”
C: FINAL DATE FOR 2021 ACADEMIC REGISTRATION FOR ANY RE-ADMITTED, NEW (FIRST TIME ENTERING) OR RETURNING CWM, HONOURS or POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA STUDENT
