Requirements for International Clearance

These are the requirements for International clearance. (Please note that certification of the below documents must be no longer than 3 months)

REQUIREMENTS FOR FULL TIME STUDENTS IN POSSESSION OF A STUDY VISA (Full time students who reside in south Africa for the sole purpose of studies)

  • Valid Passport (Certified Copy)
  • Valid Study Visa (Certified Copy)
  • Proof of a valid Comp Care or Momentum Medical Health Cover (12 months cover)

MEDICAL HEALTH COVER

It is compulsory for you to obtain one of the UKZN recommended medical health covers that are CompCare and Momentum Health. You will be required to pay for the full calendar year, i.e. from 1 January to 31 December of that year, or for 6 months if you will be spending one semester at the university.

Medical Health Cover is one of the requirements when applying for a study visa at the South African High Commission in your country. Please be advised that without Medical Health Cover you will not be granted a study visa. It is thus advisable to make the necessary financial arrangements for the medical health cover prior to applying for a study visa.

REQUIREMENTS FOR A DISTANCE LEARNER (If the student will not be residing in South Africa for the duration of their study)

  • Valid Passport (Certified Copy)
  • an affidavit
  • A letter from Supervisor or a letter from the higher degrees office stating that the student will not be residing in SA.


REQUIREMENTS FOR AN INTERNATIONAL PART TIME STUDENTS IN POSSESSION OF A WORK VISA
(students who are in south Africa to work and study part time)

  • Valid Passport (Certified Copy)
  • Valid Work Visa (Certified Copy)


REQUIREMENTS FOR STUDENTS IN POSSESSION OF AN ASYLUM SEEKER OR REFUGEE STATUS

  • Valid Passport (Certified Copy)
  • Valid Asylum seeker or refugee permit (Certified copies)


REQUIREMENT FOR STUDENTS INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS IN POSSESSION OF A PERMANENT RESIDENT  PERMIT
(students who have a applied for a permanent residence status)

  • Valid Passport (Certified Copy)
  • Valid Permanent Residents permit (Certified Copy)


STUDENTS IN POSSESSION OF AN ID BOOK
(Green Book) need to submit a certified copy of the ID Book.

Students  must proceed to finance to settle their registration fees. international levy, student levy and previous years fees if any.

Students may register their modules online, or contact their college in order to register their Modules for the semester.

Due to COVID-19 regulations please note

  • Please visit our offices only if necessary, make sure that you schedule appointments with a relevant officer before arrival.
  • All advising remains by appointment only.  Same-day and next-day virtual appointments are usually available. Please send us a WhatsApp message to schedule an appointment, our details are listed below.
  • If visiting the International Student Office for a scheduled appointment, please be aware of the following:
  • Facial masks are required at all times.
  • Please sanitize your hands upon arrival.
  • Follow all directions signs and maintain physical distancing.
  • Only the individual who scheduled the appointment is allowed in the office.  
  • Do not come to the office if you are displaying COVID-19 symptoms or have been exposed to COVID-19 in the last 14 days.  COVID-19 symptoms include fever, cough, difficulty breathing, and fatigue. We reserve the right to cancel an appointment if enough risk is present.

Please note that ISO will communicate with you via WhatsApp and email. Therefore, we advise that you provide an accurate WhatsApp number so the ISO can add you into the group. Relevant information will also be posted on the UKZN notices. Please ensure to inform the ISO should your phone number change during the cause of your studies.

ISO will host workshops, events and meetings for international students throughout the duration of the year. You will be notified via our WhatsApp group or an email will be sent to the International Student Association representative (ISA). Please ensure that you register with your ISA upon your arrival. It is advisable that you attend all ISO social gatherings, as this is an important method used to follow-up on the well-being of international students at UKZN.
