UKZN Safety & Security

The safety and security of our students, staff and visitors is a high priority that is taken very seriously by the University. Providing for the safety and well-being of the community is the professional responsibility of the Division of Risk Management Services (RMS), as well as ensuring that the University’s business is not adversely interrupted by instances of protest action. The University continuously evaluates the operations of RMS and takes action to strengthen and improve the safety and security of the University. In summary the responsibilities of RMS include the following:

  1. Security Services
  2. Occupational Health and Safety
  3. Traffic Management
  4. Events Co-ordination
  5. Investigations

RMS Institutional Objectives

  1. To provide protection for all students, staff and visitors to the University of KwaZulu-Natal;
  1. To protect all real and personal property; and
  2. To enforce University policies and regulations and the laws of the Republic of South Africa.

The department provides continuous protection of all campus grounds and facilities.

Members of the RMS have peace officer status, and therefore have the power to make arrests on campus. The department has a cooperative working relationship with other local area law enforcement agencies to help maintain a safe campus atmosphere.
