WARNING ON UNVERIFIED BANK ACCOUNTS USED FOR SCAMS

COMMUNIQUE FROM THE OFFICE OF THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR: CORPORATE RELATIONS WARNING ON UNVERIFIED BANK ACCOUNTS USED FOR SCAMS

Dear Staff and Students

The University of KwaZulu-Natal warns all returning and new students to be vigilant and cautious when making any payments for their registration fees or any other fees related to the University.

A recent incident has come to the attention of the University Management, where a returning student was misled into depositing their registration fee into an unverified bank account that was not under the name of the University.

It is believed that the student may have been a victim of a fraudulent scam, and the University is currently investigating the matter.

The University is appealing to all members of the University community to only rely on information provided through official channels, such as the University’s website and official communique.

The website lists contact details for staff members from various colleges and units, and any inquiries or concerns should be directed to them.

The University takes these incidents very seriously and will not tolerate any fraudulent activities that use the name of the University to deceive unsuspecting students.

The University will leave no stone unturned in its investigation and ensure that those responsible for the scam will face criminal charges. In addition, the University will impose internal disciplinary measures and sanctions against any guilty parties.

We strongly condemn these fraudulent activities and view them as morally reprehensible.

The University is committed to providing a safe and secure environment for its students and will continue to take all necessary steps to protect their interests.

The University’s official bank account for Student Deposits is as follows:

  • Bank: Standard Bank
  • Branch Code: 045426
  • Account Number: 053081072
  • Beneficiary Reference: UKZN Student Number ONLY (mandatory)

The University is preloaded as a beneficiary with all major South African banks. One needs to search for UKZN Student Deposits. This information is available on the UKZN website.
